Copper IUD

An IUD is a small T-shaped device that is inserted through the vagina into the uterus by a healthcare provider. Can be inserted up to 7 days after unprotected sex.

When a copper IUD is inserted before ovulation, it prevents fertilization by stopping the sperm from moving. If it is inserted after ovulation, the copper IUD prevents implantation.

Requires a prescription, in Yukon visit the Yukon Sexual Health Clinic, local health center, or family doc to access. 

Emergency Contraception (EC) pills/ morning after pill

A pill that can be taken 3 to 5 days (depending on the kind) after unprotected sex. The pill(s) delays the release of an egg (ovum) before ovulation. If someone is too close to ovulation or has already ovulated it will not work.

The medication should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex.

Does NOT require a prescription. In Yukon, it can be purchased from a pharmacy or for free from the Yukon Sexual Health Clinic, Yukon Communicable Disease Control, or a local health center.
