Gender identity – is someone’s feeling of being male, female, both, neither or something entirely different. Common terms are:
- Cisgender – someone whose sex assigned at birth and gender identity are the same.
- Agender – someone who does not identify with a gender.
- Gender fluid – someone who does not identify themselves as having a fixed gender.
- Gender non-conforming – a person whose behaviour or appearance does not conform to cultural and social expectations about what is appropriate to their gender.
- Non-binary – someone who does not identify as exclusively a man or a woman. They could feel like they are a mix of genders or no gender at all.
- Transgender – someone whose sex assigned at birth and gender identity are different.
- Queer – someone who expresses a fluidity of gender expression, identity and/or sexual orientation.
