What is gender identity?

Gender identity – is someone’s feeling of being male, female, both, neither or something entirely differentCommon terms are:

 

  • Cisgender – someone whose sex assigned at birth and gender identity are the same. 
  • Agender – someone who does not identify with a gender. 
  • Gender fluid – someone who does not identify themselves as having a fixed gender. 
  • Gender non-conforming – a person whose behaviour or appearance does not conform to cultural and social expectations about what is appropriate to their gender. 
  • Non-binary – someone who does not identify as exclusively a man or a woman. They could feel like they are a mix of genders or no gender at all.
  • Transgender – someone whose sex assigned at birth and gender identity are different. 
  • Queer – someone who expresses a fluidity of gender expression, identity and/or sexual orientation.
