Gender is what a society says is masculine or feminine. The way men and women are expected to act based on their assigned sex at birth.

What is gender identity?

Gender identity is someone’s feeling of being male, female, both, neither or something entirely different

Common terms:

Cisgender:

Someone whose sex assigned at birth and gender identity are the same. 

Agender:

Someone who does not identify with a gender. 

Gender fluid:

Someone who does not identify themselves as having a fixed gender. 

Gender non-conforming:

A person whose behaviour or appearance does not conform to cultural and social expectations about what is appropriate to their gender. 

Non-binary:

Someone who does not identify as exclusively a man or a woman. They could feel like they are a mix of genders or no gender at all.

Transgender:

Someone whose sex assigned at birth and gender identity are different. 

Queer:

Someone who expresses a fluidity of gender expression, identity and/or sexual orientation.
