Types of natural birth control

Abstinence

Abstinence refers to not having sex. There are many forms of sexual abstinence. In terms of birth control, it means not having penis and vagina sex. Total abstinence is theoretically 100% effective in preventing pregnancy. However, people rarely abstain 100% of the time.

Fertility Awareness Methods or Family Planning

These are practices to figure out when someone is most likely to get pregnant (their fertility window) so they can avoid penis and vagina sex or use a condom during that time.

It can be hard to figure out your fertility window.  This method has a very high failure rate and is not recommended as reliable birth control.

Withdrawal or Pull-Out Method

The pull-out method is an attempt to pull the penis out of the vagina before ejaculation (releasing semen/sperm). Ejaculation takes place outside and away from the vagina.

This method has a very high failure rate and is NOT recommended!
Before ejaculation the penis releases a fluid called pre-ejaculate (pre-cum) that can contain sperm or people don’t “pull-out” in time.
