Contraceptives - IUD

Intrauterine Devices - IUDs

A small T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider. There are two types of IUDs: Copper and Hormonal.

Copper IUDs stop the sperm from moving so they can’t reach an egg. It also changes the uterus lining so a fertilized egg cannot implant.

Hormonal IUDs thicken cervical fluid, which stops sperm from reaching an egg. It also changes the uterus lining so a fertilized egg cannot implant.

IUDs can stay in for 3 to 10 years (depending on the kind) but can be removed at any time by a healthcare provider.
