  • TechWithoutViolence.ca - Resources to help prevent, respond to and support individuals experiencing online gender-based violence or harassment—known as cyberviolence.

Perpetrators (or the people who commit assaults) have often been victims of sexualized assault themselves, or they have never had proper sexual health education. 

It is important they seek counselling and are held legally responsible for their actions. 

When should you get help?

How soon should I get help if I have been assaulted or a victim of technology facilitated sexualized violence?

  • As soon as possible from health care provider and counsellor. 
  • Early care can help prevent HIV and other STIs, unwanted pregnancy, and long term-term psychological trauma.
  • Testing within 24 hours can show if a date rape drug was used in the assault.
  • Within 7 days you can do a sexual assault examination kit to collect DNA and document injuries for evidence. 

How to help a friend who's a victim

How can I help a friend who has been assaulted or a victim of technology facilitated sexualized violence?

  • Help them find treatment services (e.g., STI and pregnancy testing and counselling)
  • Believe them.
  • Remind them it’s not their fault.
  • Do not gossip about it. 
  • Be patient. 
  • Find support for yourself too.
